Restaurateurs awarded scholarships at fund-raiser

11/6/2005

Area restaurateurs were out in full force at the Northwestern Ohio Restaurant Association s George Mancy Scholarship Fund-raiser on Oct. 23 at Gladieux Meadows.

Charlie Rose of Gladieux Catering carved a steamship round of corned beef at the Gladieux table which also featured a potato bar. On the side wall, Dennis Chung of Koto Buki expertly rolled seaweed leaves filled with rice, seafood, and vegetables for California rolls and spicy tuna rolls. He produced enough to fill a custom-made sailboat that doubled as a sushi serving dish.

Meanwhile, NWORA president Mike Mancy and his cousin, Gus Mancy, proudly talked about the Mancys latest restaurant venture, the Bluewater Grille, which will open later this month at 461 West Dussel Dr. in Maumee, offering fresh seafood, steaks, and an oyster bar. The new restaurant s chef, Rob Campbell, was serving oysters on the half shell and making crab cakes throughout the evening.

Greg Rufty, owner of Gianno s, which recently moved from Dussel to the 301 River Rd. location that was once Linck s Inn, was proud of the Chef s Table concept that he s introduced at the new place. A minimum of four people and a maximum of eight people can order a three-course, five-course, or seven course dinner at the Chef s Table; guest chefs are possible. The menu advises guests to let the staff know of any food allergies when making reservations.

Also attending the event was Ohio Restaurant Association president Geoffrey Hetrick with his wife, Natalie.

Also participating were Magic Wok, Ciao!, Zia s and the Real Seafood Co., the Beirut, Byblos, and Poco Piatti, Fifi s, the Rose and the Thistle, Georgio s Cafe International, and Mancy s.

During the evening, five $2,000 scholarships were awarded. The winners included Brea Hamlin, who attends Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio; Anna Rice, who attends Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio; Amanda Hoar and Mary Woyame, who attend Penta Career Center, and Erin Marten, who attends Owens Community College.
