LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Emphasize education, not tax cuts

1/23/2012

Is it a coincidence that the current Congress is the richest on record ("House of wealth," editorial, Dec. 30)? If members of Congress are supported by contributions from the richest 1 percent, then whom do you think the politicians' allegiance lies with?

It is time that we reassess our direction. Rather than cutting taxes for the rich, we should be proposing investment in the future. Education and infrastructure spending is where we should be headed.

We should vote out all incumbents and start from scratch.

City must toughen stand against theft

The soft-touch mentality of those in charge of our city is coming to a head ("Police help sought over missing city equipment," Jan. 13).

At one time, employees who were caught with their hands in the cookie jar were criminally charged. If those who were responsible for seeing that the rules were followed failed to do so, they were expected to resign.

False claims for hours worked amount to theft. Use of government-owned property for private use is theft. Depriving government of publicly owned property is theft.

It is time for a grand jury to get involved and, except for people who come clean with prosecutors, begin to hand down indictments.

City street crews draw accolades

Workers for the city's Department of Streets, Bridges, and Harbor perform their jobs like a well-oiled machine, particularly when it comes to leaf pickup.

The job is daunting because of the mountains of leaves and the hundreds of miles of streets, but what I have observed has been efficiency at its finest.

The workers were quick, thorough, and respectful of homeowners and traffic.

I am proud to live in a city where the workers take pride in the job they do for us.

Let's celebrate by fixing streetlights

Here's a great way for Toledo to celebrate ("It's Toledo's 175th birthday, but no celebration planned," Jan. 7): getting all streetlights fixed, including those in alleys.

The city should be working with Toledo Edison to brighten the city. My daughter came here from New York City over the Christmas holiday and remarked how dark it was in the parts of town she traveled through at night.

New 9th District like a child's toy

As an independent voter, I wonder whether the people who drew the new area of the 9th Congressional District used Legos ("Radio ad helps Kaptur make foray into new 9th," Jan. 19).
