3 guilty in poaching of deer in Maumee on Thanksgiving
9/4/2014Three people have been found guilty of offenses connected with the poaching of a white-tailed deer in Maumee on Thanksgiving.
The 10-point buck, which was frequently photographed in and around the Side Cut Metropark area, was killed with a crossbow in the predawn hours in a residential yard, according to the Findlay office of the Ohio Division of Wildlife.
Zachary Jarrell of Perrysburg was found guilty of four violations by the Division of Wildlife and two charges filed by Maumee relating to the incident, which took place near St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and school.
He was sentenced to 120 days jail, with 110 days suspended if he has no other violations for three years. He is to serve the 10 days by electronic home monitoring.
Jarrell, whose age was unavailable, must also pay the state $500 in restitution for the value of the deer and $300 to cover the cost of DNA testing used during the case.
He also was ordered to forfeit the crossbow used to commit the violation, complete 60 hours of community service, and pay $593 in fines and court costs. His hunting privileges are also suspended for three years.
Allison Swift of Perrysburg and Nicholas Boggs of Rossford, whose ages also were unavailable, were charged with assisting in poaching the deer. They each paid $198 in fines and court costs.
