Jeff Klein, 49, serves as chief of the Perrysburg Fire Department. He and his wife, Sue, live in Perrysburg, and he has two children and three stepchildren.

How long have you been a first responder?

Since 1981

What are the duties of your job?

Oversee the operations of the Perrysburg Fire Division and future planning

What inspired you toward this kind of work?

My uncle owned Bunting Ambulance in Toledo and I began my career there. I have also worked in Toledo Hospital's emergency room and with a private ambulance in Michigan. I served as a volunteer firefighter with Sylvania Township and Perrysburg Township and full-time on Whitehouse Life Squad. In 1991 I was among the first group of firefighters/paramedics to be let go from Ottawa Hills when a county EMS levy failed.

What is the most memorable incident to which you responded or in which you were involved?

I have had a number of them, mostly what calls I remember are because of the affect the call had on the family, both positive and negative.

If you weren't in this field, what other kind of work would you like to do?

I would think I would have tried to stay in public safety, EMS/RN, police, dispatching.

What were you like in high school?

Not the best student, was planning on a music career that never happened.

What hobbies do you enjoy?

I play the bagpipes for Toledo Fire Pipes and Drums, and amateur radio.

Where have you traveled in the world, or where would you like to go?

Hocking Hills and Gatlinburg because of nature and a relaxing feel. Disney because there is so much to do for the entire family and good internal transportation.

What is your favorite place to eat in Perrysburg?

El Vaquero, Jed’s, Swig’s, Café Marie. Perrysburg has a number of exceptional local restaurants to choose from.

What are some good things about the community that you serve?

It is a great community to live in, city services are great and the public truly appreciates the services we receive.
