Tom King, 57, of Perrysburg, serves as planning and zoning administrator for the city of Perrysburg. He and wife Debbie have twin 24-year-old sons and a 22-year-old daughter.

Mr. King said he leads the staff support for the Planning Commission, City Council, Historic Landmarks Commission, and the mayor's office by reviewing building and development projects and assisting applicants to meet community standards of planning and zoning. He also coordinates plans and initiatives intended to improve the physical layout and development of Perrysburg.

What do you like most about the work you do?

The people of Perrysburg. They are genuine, caring, and have a passion for Perrysburg, as it is and its future.

What do you wish more people knew about zoning?

That just to zone a certain way doesn’t automatically make it happen. It takes private initiative, therefore the zoning must be supportive of the market in addition to community values.

What planning challenges or opportunities does the city of Perrysburg face?

We must continue to improve Perrysburg to meet changing lifestyles and preferences, building on the foresight of past efforts. Downtown Perrysburg should continue to be strengthened as a draw for residents not only for shopping and dining, but for social mixing, entertainment and preferably additional housing. The downtown binds us as a community and gives us unique identity. Also, many residents seek healthier lifestyles so we also should look for additional ways to increase walking and biking in our community.

If you weren't doing this, what other kind of work would you like to do?

Either be a park ranger or drive a truck.

What are some of your hobbies and recreational activities?

Travel, hiking, and I enjoy riding my bicycle whether on a trail, road, or multi-day trip.

Where else have you lived?

Chicago, Cleveland, Akron, and Hudson, Ohio.

What do you like about northwest Ohio?

The parks are fantastic, and many cute towns – like Perrysburg!

What is the most ambitious do-it-yourself project you've ever undertaken?

Refinishing kitchen cabinets – because I’m in the middle of it now.

What are your favorite restaurants in the Perrysburg area?

Zingo’s and Swig’s

Do you have special traditions for the Thanksgiving holiday?

The usual mealtime favorites – pumpkin pie especially.
