Town Talk: Rev. Darcy Metcalfe

The Rev. Darcy Metcalfe has recently assumed leadership of the First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Metcalfe began ministering in Perrysburg in September.

The Rev. Darcy Metcalfe, 33, is pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Perrysburg. She and husband Bill Mudd live in Perrysburg.

How long have you been a pastor?

I have previously worked as a youth director, so this last six months is my first time working as solo pastor.

When were you installed?

I was installed at First Presbyterian on Sept. 30, but my first day working here was June 18 of this year.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

I really enjoy getting to know the people in the congregation and in this community. First Presbyterian is a very warm and welcoming church.

What are stressful aspects of your work?

Probably the most stressful aspect of my work is -- as it seems with many jobs -- there are just not enough hours in the week!

How do you encourage people to give of their time and talents?

I think the key is to identify what their gifts are and what they enjoy doing and create a space where they can use these gifts in the ministry of the church.

What may surprise people about what it's like to be a pastor?

I think the number of hours and work you put behind what you do as a pastor. It is a 24/7 ministry. Where as most people may get Saturday and Sunday off during the week, pastors do not get that luxury.

What other careers have you considered?

Before I became a pastor, I bounced around in many different professions trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I worked in the journalism field for a while, and also was signed up for truck-driving school at one point.

What are some of your hobbies?

I love running. Running is my favorite form of prayer. I also really enjoy reading and learning new things. One First Presbyterian member, Earl Witzler, recently was so kind to give me a few books from his library, which totally made my week. I thoroughly enjoy any moment I get to spend reading and learning.

What is your favorite place to eat in the Perrysburg area?

Zingo's is definitely my favorite, thus far. Go apricot salad and carrot cupcakes!

Do you have any Christmas traditions?

In the church there are so many Christmas traditions that have so much meaning to me. However, my favorite tradition at Christmas is just to be surrounded by family, friends, and community and enjoy that incredible gift.
