Kende work on display at River House Arts

Brian Kennedy, director of the Toledo Museum of Art, had high praise for the River House Arts gallery in Perrysburg as he visited there Friday night for a reception for artist Ivan Kende.

"They take a lot of risks. And they hang beautifully," he said.

What is hanging from the walls here during the month of November are vibrant acrylic paintings, huge leather masks, and lovely yet haunting pastels of Kende's show "Archetypes: Divining the Nagual."

The pieces evoke the mystical connection between the human soul and the natural environment, and there are motifs of a canoe and a mother figure. Leather sculptures sit atop unfinished blocks of ash wood after being tooled and tanned and laced into suggestions of animals and helmets and blockish forms.
