Tree City Film Festival to be held Friday night
Short films by Sylvania students to be shown at Southview
4/10/2013The Sylvania Community Arts Commission is rolling out the red carpet Friday night for the premiere movie event of the first annual Tree City Film Festival.
Sylvania’s budding stars will shine on the big screen Friday at Southview High School, 7225 Sylvania Ave. The Shorties films shot by students kindergarten to 8 grade with an iPod, phone camera, or other digital video device will be viewed at 6 p.m. The event starts with a Hollywood-themed arrival with flashing lights of the paparazzi who will be taking photos of attendees on the red carpet at 5:30 p.m.
Jeremy Baumhower, a member of the arts commission who spearheaded the Shorties film contest, said children deserve an Oscar-style celebration for their art efforts.
Exploring the performing arts field at an early age “challenges children and helps them to find their voice, and to discover something they love,” Mr. Baumhower said.
The viewing of the 15 short videos will begin at 6 p.m. followed by a film judging and winner announcement.
“We have a mixed bag of Shorties films from music videos to comedy pieces," said Jennifer Archer, executive director of the Sylvania Community Arts Commission. Mrs. Archer is looking forward to showing one piece that was created by the entire Sylvan Elementary School. “Even the staff make an appearance in the film,” she said.
The Tree City Film Festival continues through Saturday. Sylvania’s Train Barn located in the Historical Village on North Main Street will be transformed into a magical movie house. The winners of the 50-hour Short Shoot Challenge will be announced for the student entries following the 1:30 p.m. film viewing. At 6 p.m. the non-student independent films will be played, followed by a question-and-answer session with the filmmakers. The non-student films will be showcased again at 9 p.m., followed by the announcement of the winner. Attendees will vote for their favorite independent film.
Tickets for the Shorties event are $3. Entrance to the 50-hour Short Shoot Film Challenge student category film viewing is $5, and $8 for the non-student category viewing. Tickets can be purchased at the event, or at Treo Restaurant, 5703 Main St. For more information visit sylvaniaarts.org.
