The Sylvania Township Fire Department will add a new vehicle to its command fleet.

A 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe police vehicle was approved for purchase by the township's board of trustees Thursday night. The SUV will be purchased through a state purchasing program for $31,596.

The new vehicle replaces a 2000 Chevrolet Impala. The Impala will be sold at auction on Govdeals.com, once the new truck is outfitted with the proper equipment.

The command vehicle will be used by an administrative chief to direct and supervise firefighters while they are fighting a fire or responding to other emergency incidents.

“It will be an office on wheels with equipment, charts, pre-plans for a commercial building, and books with information about hazardous materials to help us determine how to approach chemicals we may come across,” Fire Chief Jeff Kowalski said.

The fire department budgeted for the purchase; it will be funded through its vehicle fund.
