Brass ensemble to perform Sunday at St. Andrew's

Eurobrass will stop in Toledo during its second U.S. tour.

St. Andrew's Episcopal Church will present eurobrass, an international brass ensemble, in a free concert at 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the church, 2770 West Central Ave. Players are professionals from the United States and Europe who perform on trumpets, tubas, horns, and trombones.

Currently on a 20-stop tour, the dozen players in eurobrass present programs balancing secular and sacred music arranged for various combinations of horns.

Founded in 1978 and based in Konigsburg, Germany, the group is led by Angie Hunter and Chris Wood. This is its second U.S. tour and will cover venues from Trenton, Mich., to Waco, Texas.

A public reception will follow the concert.

The traveling ensemble also will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday on the Colonnade Green of Defiance College. This concert, part of the Music in Your Park Series, also is free.

Moscow Ballet soloist Natalia Miroshynk will be in residence starting Monday at In Motion Dance Studio, 636 Miami St., Tiffin, to offer a week-long intensive of classes and private lessons to local dancers.

A graduate of the Kiev Academic Choreographic School in the Ukraine, Miroshynk uses and teaches the Vaganova style of classical dance. She has been a soloist with the Moscow Ballet since 2006.

Generations of dance lovers have watched the Moscow group's productions of The Nutcracker across the United States.

Giuseppe Verdi's Don Carlo, the final Encore showing of Metropolitan Opera performances from previous seasons, is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at RAVE Cinemas Fallen Timbers. Tenor Roberto Alagna will sing the title role with other stars including Marina Poplayskaya, Anna Smirnova, Simon Keenleyside, Ferruccio Furlanetto, and Eric Halfverson in this production directed by Nicholas Hytner. Yaniq Nezet-Seguin conducts the Metropolitan Orchestra.

Tickets start at $20 at the RAVE box office. Opera length is three hours and 30 minutes. This production was broadcast originally in December.

Aspiring jazz singers can make musical hay while the hot summer sun shines during the Bowling Green State University Vocal Jazz Camp Aug. 1-7, featuring one of the most renowned singing groups in the country -- the New York Voices. The camp will be held in the Moore Musical Arts Center on campus.

Founded two decades ago by four graduates of Ithaca College, the vocal ensemble has created a major niche in the live and recorded music worlds with a repertoire reaching from Big Band classics to music from subsequent decades up to the present. Their interests are rooted in jazz, but often Brazilian, R&B, classical, and pop influences are infused with equal creativity and authenticity.

The quartet launched this collaboration with BGSU in 2009, drawing an international clientele. This year, singers Lauren Kinhan, Darmon Meader, Peter Eldridge, and Kim Nazarian will be on campus to work with singers and ensembles from high school and college to professionals and educators. Graduate credit will be available for qualified participants.

Can you imagine Muddy the Mud Hen and his partner, Mudonna, wearing tutus and performing a pas de deux at Fifth Third Field? Talk about a Seventh Inning Stretch!

But it could happen if Nigel Burgoine, founder and artistic director of Ballet Theatre of Toledo, can get the mascots' acts together before the season ends.

Burgoine and BTT are among seven recipients sharing $27,708 from the Helping Hens Fund of the local ball team. Grants are made annually to not-for-profit groups that offer services to Toledo young people.

Mud Hens funds will sponsor eight young dancers during the Ballet Theatre school year. Other recipients included Central City Ministries of the Diocese of Toledo; the International Boxing Club, Judan Judo of Toledo, the Lenawee County Education Foundation, the Monroe Street Neighborhood Center, and the Spina Bifida Association of Northwest Ohio.
