Botanical garden hosts plant sale, workshops

The Toledo Botanical Garden Plant Sale this weekend will offer more than 8,000 perennials, 200 varieties of herbs, Oak Openings native plants, roses, vegetables, and hanging baskets. Experts will be on hand to assist. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. There will be children's activities, horticulture demonstrations, live entertainment, and refreshments for sale. The plant sale will be held at the Bancroft Street entrance to the garden, between Holland-Sylvania and Reynolds roads However, to attend the 45-minute workshops in the Conference Center, enter at 5403 Elmer Dr. New perennials will be discussed by Barbara Balgoyen at 10 a.m.; Theresa Hoen will speak on miniature gardens at 11 a.m., and at 1 p.m., Robert Bishop will talk about bonsai growing for beginners. Muddy, Muddona, and the Toledo Mud Hens have teamed up with the Toledo Symphony for Take Me Out to the Ball Game, an event to introduce the entire family to classical music, from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle, 2445 Monroe St. Pre-concert activities for children, including coloring sheets, ball toss, and photos with Muddy and Muddonna, begin at 2 p.m. in the Peristyle lobby, and are free with concert ticket purchase. The concert begins at 3 p.m. The Toledo Symphony School of Music will provide live music in the lobby and will perform the National Anthem with the symphony before the concert. Dancing With the Military Stars, a fund-raiser to benefit veterans with traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic stress disorder, will be held Saturday at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza/Amtrak station, 415 Emerald Ave. Wounded veterans will be honored at the event. Professional dancers and complimentary dance lessons will be provided by the Dance Clinic.
