News of Art: Youth summer program is taking applications

Teens ages 14 to 18 who love art may apply for 2014’s Young Artists at Work summer program, which has a March 21 deadline. Details and applications are here. 

This paid, six-week program enables diverse and at-risk youth to learn about the arts as a business, build work ethic, and create public art. Selection is competitive.

Toledo School for the Arts is bringing its First Fridays back, beginning at 9 a.m. Friday. There will be student performances, refreshments, a faculty art exhibit in Gallerie 333, and a Black History Month show in the Gallery on Third. A reception for Words with a View: An Exploration of Photography & Digital Typography, by Sarah Sobel-Poage of Perrysburg, will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in Downtown Latte. It features her photographic images printed on metal and wood, and will be on view through Feb. 27. Downtown Latte is at 44 S. St. Clair St.

Casey Jex Smith will speak at 7 p.m. Saturday in Launch Pad Cooperative about the steps he took to become represented by a gallery, how he subsequently lost representation, and working with nonprofit groups. A show of his work is at Launch Pad, 911 Jefferson Ave., through Feb. 21, when he will speak again at 7 p.m.

New shows organized by Prizm Creative Community include Iconic Images at Sam B’s restaurant in Bowling Green through May 28, and at Starbucks in Levis Commons, Perrysburg, the Girl with the Purple Hair is an exhibit of abstract paintings that represent the transition to adulthood, by Sarah Bonham.

A free talk by Amy Ringholz, painter/​director, will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in Room 204 of the Fine Arts Center at Bowling Green State University. Ringholz was a judge at the 63rd Undergraduate Exhibition, which opens Sunday with a 2 to 4 p.m. reception and continues through Feb. 23 in the Bryan/​Wankelman galleries in the arts center.

The annual Jewelry Trunk Show at the American Gallery featuring seven artists will be 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. Also, hand-forged knives made by Hans Ruebel will be displayed. The gallery is at 6600 Sylvania Ave. Information: 419-882-8949.

For the Love of Art, an art walk and show in Pemberville featuring 150 pieces by more than a dozen people, will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 15. Art will also be featured along downtown streets and in businesses. Information: 419-287-3274.
