Sister Jane Mary Sorosiak is this year’s inductee to Sylvania’s Distinguished Artist Hall of Fame.
Downtown Sylvania’s third Maple and Main Street Art Fair will be 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. May 31 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 1, featuring 100 artists lining Main Street between Monroe and Erie streets, two stages with live music, a children’s tent, and food vendors.

● Sister Jane Mary Sorosiak is this year’s inductee to Sylvania’s Distinguished Artist Hall of Fame. She’ll be honored and her creative work will be on view at a 6 to 9 p.m. gala May 30 in the Train Barn at Sylvania Historical Village.
Her work also can be seen in the 101 banners hung through downtown Sylvania.

Sister Jane Mary, 84, works every day in her studio at Lourdes University. She taught for decades and is known for her ceramic murals, some of which can be seen at either end of the Main Street bridge over Ten Mile Creek in Sylvania. Many of the buildings at Lourdes are adorned with her murals, several of them huge and affixed to exteriors.
She established Lourdes’ associate of arts program and helped develop it into a four-year degree. Born in North Toledo, she’s a member of the Sylvania Franciscan community.

● A Memorial Day White Party (as in, it’s socially kosher to wear white clothing after Memorial Day) at joenstas’ gallery, 18 N. St. Clair St., will be at 7 p.m. Friday. On view will be paintings and jewelry by local artists, along with vintage clothing, accessories, and furniture. Models representing a variety of 20th century looks will circulate. ● Art Walks, 6 to 9 p.m., begin tonight in the Warehouse and Uptown districts. Meander, shop, people-watch, eat, and drink. Art Walks will be on the fourth Thursday of each month through September. A map and list of participating venues are at theartscommission.org. Information: 419-254-2787.

● A revamped Toledo Area Artists’ Exhibition will accept applications from June 1 to June 30 from people living within a 150-mile radius of the Toledo Museum of Art. Entrants should submit a portfolio of 10 of their best works, an artist statement, and a CV. Selected artists will have their work included in the late-November show in the museum’s Canaday Gallery. The numerous categories of the past will be pared down to four, and the winners will share $10,000 in prizes. ● Art-A-Licious seeks exhibitors for its annual festival in downtown Adrian Sept. 19 and 20. Application deadline is July 7. Information: artalicious.org/artist-info and email adrianartists@gmail.com.
● The Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition, with $11,000 in awards, has a May 29 deadline. More than 300 works will be selected and 100,000 people are expected to visit the exhibit. Information: www.ohiostatefair.com/index.php/competitions-37/arts-crafts-a-fashion/fine-arts.
● Northwest Ohio struck out in the 2014 Governor’s Awards for the Arts in Ohio. Winners are: for arts administration, Sherri Geldin, Wexner Center for the Arts (Columbus); arts education, Dancing Wheels Company & School (Cleveland); arts patron, the Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr./U.S. Bank Foundation (Cincinnati); business support of the arts, Macy’s, Inc. (statewide); community development and participation, Neal Gittleman, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra (Dayton); individual artist, Sheri Williams, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company (Dayton).
The awards are organized by the Ohio Arts Council; its prestigious 17-member board includes no one from northwest Ohio.
