News of Art: New show to feature intricate cut-paper works

OBJECTOpening with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday is Paper Tigers and Clay Dogs, a show by Mary Gaynier, known primarily for her intricate cut-paper works. She’ll introduce her new alien-like ceramic creatures at at LeSo Gallery, 1527 Starr Ave.

The show will close June 20 with a 7 to 9 p.m. reception and artist talk. Regular gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

● Artists interpreting scenic landscapes at easels are the centerpiece of Art and About in Waterville: A Plein Air Event, today through Saturday. To observe artists in the act from 9 a.m. to 2 pm., obtain a map of where they’ll be at Silver Lining Gallery, 122 Mechanic St. in Waterville. Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. in Conrad Park, many of those fresh paintings will be for sale, live music will lighten the air, and children’s activities will be offered by the Waterville Area Arts Commission. ● Launch Pad Cooperative, a small but popular gallery in the Davis Building, will close its doors June 13 with a 7 to 9 p.m. reception of its current show, process(ing)/​recall, featuring work by Jefferson Nelson and Ben Lock. Timothy Gaewsky, founder, said he and co-director Crystal Phelps decided to shift their focus to their individual studio practices and other personal endeavors. ● A free sculpture tour for people who have mild memory loss and their companions will be at 1 p.m. June 13 at the Toledo Museum of Art. It will be followed by a hands-on art activity. Registration is required at 1-800-272-3900.

● A trip to Ann Arbor, with visits to shops, eateries, and more will meet at 8:45 a.m. June 13 at Riverplace/​Churchill’s parking lot on State Rt. 25 outside the Subway Restaurant in Perrysburg. ● Tiffin Art Guild’s auction of new art and craft items made by guild members and friends will be held Sunday at the Historic Tiffin Red Train Depot on North Monroe Street in Tiffin. Preview is at 11 a.m. Sunday followed by the auction about noon. Bidders can place pre-bids on some objects at the Tiffin Art Guild Art Gallery, 178 S. Washington St., Tiffin.

● Gibsonburg’s Celebration of the Arts Festival in Williams Park will be June 14 in conjunction with its 10th Sculpture in the Village. A craft sale will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by other activities including a 2:30 p.m. parade at Hilfiker Elementary School. Information: johnsdk@woh.rr.com.

● The Arts Partnership of Greater Hancock County in Findlay has named Craig VanRenterghem as education director, responsible for Youtheatre productions and workshops, School Day Performances, and promoting the arts in schools. He is a 2005 graduate of Bluffton University.

● George Benson, Sr.’s acrylic paintings on canvas — abstracts, expressionist, and minimalist landscapes — will be in Downtown Latte, 44 S. St. Clair St., through June.

● Art and memorabilia will be auctioned June 20 at the Pinnacle in Maumee to raise money for Cancer Connection of Northwest Ohio. Auctioned will be decorative work, art by popular artists, and memorabilia including sports, movies, music, and rock and roll. The preview is at 6 p.m., with the auction at 7:30. ● New ceramics are solicited for the Zanesville Prize for Contemporary Ceramics. One hundred pieces will be selected for the exhibit and best in show will take $20,000. Entries must be less than two years old and recommended size is a base of no more than 16 inches wide or deep, and maximum height of 31 inches. Deadline is July 15. ● Changing Hands: Art Without Reservations 3/​Contemporary North American Art from the Northeast and Southeast, explores the work of Native North Americans working in both new and traditional media. The show is the culmination of a decade-long look into fine art created by indigenous artists, and this portion of the three-part series has work by Native American, First Nations, Metis, and Inuit people in the northeastern and southeastern United States and Canada. Organized by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, it continues through Sept. 14 at the University of Michigan Museum of Art, 525 S. State St., Ann Arbor.
