Fire forces family from house near Ottawa Park

11/18/2000

A family of three had to spend the night with relatives after fire caused extensive smoke damage to the house they are renting at 1106 Alldays Ave., near Ottawa Park, authorities said.

Tasha Hollis, her husband, and a child, whose names were unavailable, fled unhurt about 8:30 p.m. when the fire was reported, Battalion Fire Chief Ora Pettaway said.

A mattress caught fire from a furnace in a small utility room at the back of the single-family, one-story frame house. Firefighters extinguished the blaze within 10 minutes before it could spread beyond the utility room. Damage was estimated at $15,000; heavy smoke damage rendered the house uninhabitable, Chief Pettaway said.
