Fire in grill area damages North Toledo restaurant

11/30/2000

A North Toledo diner was expected to be closed for business today because of a fire last night that started near a grill in the kitchen and caused an undetermined amount of damage, fire officials said.

Firefighters were called to New Chet's Restaurant, 1024 East Manhattan Blvd., about 9 p.m. They found the fire had spread to a wall and the ceiling. The grill was off when the fire began, Battalion Chief Luis Santiago said.

A cook and dishwasher attempted to put out the fire with an extinguisher. They and a waitress were the only people in the restaurant when the fire started.
