Cause of 2-alarm fire in duplex undetermined

12/5/2000

Firefighters battled to contain a two-alarm fire last night in an unoccupied duplex at 3962 and 3964 Homewood Avenue in which spreading flames scorched sides of an adjacent residence and building.

Battalion Chief Anthony Gregory said the fire started in the back of the first floor of the duplex and traveled upward. The blaze was reported at 10:42 p.m. The structures are near the West Toledo branch of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library on Sylvania Avenue.

A nearby resident told Chief Gregory that a friend owned the house and was in the process of remodeling it. The name of the owner was unavailable late last night. The second fire alarm was called because the flames spread to two structures, he said.

The cause is undetermined. A fire investigator called to the scene. No damage estimate was available. The fire was brought under control shortly after 11 p.m.
