A Toledo firefighter was hurt yesterday while fighting a blaze that caused an estimated $40,000 damage to the Charter One Bank branch, 1460 Byrne Rd., at Glendale Avenue, authorities said.

Firefighter Eric Sherman was treated in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center for an injured ankle.

Smoke was coming through the locked doors of the single-story building when firefighters arrived about 8 p.m., fire Captain Gerald Debien said.

The firefighter hurt his ankle on a stairway leading to the basement after crews forced their way into the building and discovered the blaze in the basement. It started in a wastepaper basket and spread to a countertop and cabinets before it was extinguished within 10 minutes. It was unclear what started the fire, Captain Debien said.
