Fire damages structures on Havre, West Alexis

12/18/2001

Two separate fires between late Sunday and early yesterday caused at least $10,000 each to a vacant house on Havre Street and a mobile home on West Alexis Road, fire officials said.

The first blaze was reported at 11:50 p.m. Sunday at a one-story house at 343 Havre. It started in a back door and spread up the rear wall. The cause of the fire was ruled arson, said Andre Tiggs of the Toledo fire investigation unit.

Firefighters then were called to 1957 West Alexis, lot 13, to a fire that was reported about 1:20 a.m. The blaze started in a bedroom. The cause is undetermined, Mr. Tiggs said.

The owner and occupant, Rebecca Thomas, 39, was returning from the bathroom when she found a chest at the foot of the bed on fire and fled. The Greater Toledo Chapter of the American Red Cross was called to help her, Mr. Tiggs said.
