Church envelopes taken in break-in at St. Mary

6/26/2002

A man broke into St. Mary Church convent yesterday and took more than a dozen collection envelopes after ransacking an office area, police said.

The man broke a first-floor window and climbed inside the convent, 217 Page St., about 4:45 a.m. Two nuns, who were sleeping upstairs, heard glass breaking and the man inside. They looked outside and saw him leaving, detective Dan Navarre said.

The man returned and left with a handful of envelopes. He ripped them open, looking for money, and threw them onto the ground as he walked. The trail of envelopes stopped on the sidewalk about a half-mile away at the intersection of Winthrop Street and Franklin Avenue, the detective said.

Detective Navarre did not know how much money was taken.
