Toledo police ask aid in convent break-in

6/29/2002

Toledo police are seeking information through the Crime Stopper program about a man who broke into the St. Mary Church convent Tuesday and took more than a dozen collection envelopes.

The man broke the first-floor window and climbed inside the convent, 217 Page St., about 4:45 a.m. Two nuns, who were sleeping upstairs, heard glass breaking and saw the man inside. They looked outside and saw him leaving, police said.

The man returned and left with a handful of envelopes. He ripped them open, apparently looking for money, and threw them onto the ground as he walked away. The trail of envelopes stopped on the sidewalk about a half-mile away at Winthrop Street and Franklin Avenue. It is unknown how much money was taken, police said.

The man was described as black, tall, and thin. He was wearing all-black clothing and was carrying a black bag. Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Stopper program. Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
