Police search for man charged in purse theft

7/25/2002

Authorities are looking for a man they believe stole a purse from a woman as she sat outside of an East Toledo pizza shop. The man is suspected in several other purse-snatches in the city, Toledo police Detective Paul Tetuan said.

Jeremiah Carney, 26, of Perrysburg, is suspected of robbery in connection with an incident July 11 at Bambino's Pizza, 649 Woodville Rd. The man leaned toward the 53-year-old victim, said he was going to get a job, grabbed her purse, and fled in a vehicle. Her purse was recovered the next day, police said. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Police are investigating more than a half-dozen purse-snatchings in parking lots throughout the city, many in West Toledo. Women loading groceries into their vehicles have been the primary target of the robberies and thefts. Some of the victims left their purses in shopping carts while they were loading their groceries. In other cases, the suspect grabbed the purse from the victim's shoulder.
