A 14-year-old boy was hospitalized in serious condition early yesterday after he crashed a car into a North Toledo grocery store while being pursued by Toledo police, authorities said.

The boy was being treated at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center for a broken ankle and a broken wrist. His car struck the IGA at 2304 Lagrange St.

Police said they saw the car traveling north on Summit Street without any lights just after midnight and tried to stop it. The boy drove toward Cherry Street, and police pursued him from Summit to Lagrange.

The boy continued north on Lagrange at a high rate of speed and failed to stop for several lights. The car then crashed through the market's brick and cement wall. An accident report said the boy was driving 45 mph in a 35 mph zone. The investigation is continuing.

Police said they issued warrants charging the boy with delinquency in connection with fleeing and eluding, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, driving without a license, and not using headlights. However, no charges had been filed in Lucas County Juvenile Court.
