Blaze hits auto parts business in Swanton

SWANTON - A fire at Performance Plus Tire & Auto here that apparently started from gas fumes yesterday caused an estimated $200,000 damage, Swanton Fire Chief Jim Guy said.

The fire was confined to the rear of the building on Airport Highway. However, smoke and water damage in the front will probably keep Performance and a NAPA Auto Parts store in the same building closed for a few days, Chief Guy said.

Performance employees had been working on a fuel pump in the shop, while another worker was welding, said Nate Leathers, an assistant manager.

About eight people were in the building when the fire broke out about 11:30 a.m. No one was hurt.

“We had some explosions, but that's not out of the ordinary for that situation,” Chief Guy said. “Things went very well.”

About 30 firefighters from Swanton, Delta, and Metamora were on the scene and Swanton police confined traffic on Airport to one lane while firefighters worked.
