Truancy sweep nets 14 Toledo juveniles

4/9/2003

Fourteen juveniles ranging in age from 12 to 16 years were picked up yesterday in a citywide truancy sweep.

Toledo police conducted the sweep, which netted six boys and eight girls, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A 15-year-old girl was taken to the Lucas County Juvenile Detention Center after police learned she was wanted on an unrelated warrant for failure to appear in court, Sgt. Carl Stachura said.

The juveniles were taken to the truancy drop-off center at 447 Dorr St. Four of the students returned to their respective schools. The other nine juveniles were picked up by their parents or guardians.

Four of the truants attend Waite High School, three go to Libbey High, and two are from DeVeaux Junior High. There was one truant each from Bowsher and Start highs, McTigue Junior High, the Mayfair Achievement Program, and the Toledo School for the Performing Arts, the sergeant said.
