HILLSDALE — A Hillsdale County man was arraigned yesterday on charges stemming from a fatal hit-skip crash over the weekend.

James Lloyd Gibson, 29, of Camden, Mich., is charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death. The felony charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. Mr. Gibson is also charged with negligent homicide, a misdemeanor with a maximum sentence of two years in prison.

The Jonesville post of the Michigan State Police said Mr. Gibson was driving a truck with a trailer that came loose Saturday as he traveled over a railroad crossing on McCallum Road in southwestern Hillsdale County. The trailer struck and killed Robin Kathleen Teller, 42, of Reading, Mich., and injured Brooke Michelle Webb, 21, of Bronson, Mich. The driver fled east on McCallum.

Mr. Gibson turned himself in Monday and told authorities he didn't realize anyone had been struck.
