A ninth grader at Bowsher High School was being held in the Lucas County Juvenile Detention Center last night after he took an unloaded 38-caliber handgun and two bullets to school this week.

The 15-year-old central Toledo boy was charged with delinquency in connection with carrying a concealed weapon and delinquency in connection with illegal conveyance of a deadly weapon on school property. He was ordered held in the center during a detention hearing yesterday before county Juvenile Court Magistrate Sue Cairl.

The Toledo police officer assigned to the school at 3548 South Detroit Ave. was called about 2 p.m. Tuesday to the dean's office, where he was told some students had told school authorities the boy had a gun, police said.

The boy was removed from class and taken to the dean's office. He had the unloaded gun in his right pocket and two 38-caliber bullets in his left pocket. Police said the boy told them he was carrying the gun for protection from possible gangs.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 12.

The boy was issued a removal with the intent to expel from Toledo Public Schools and is scheduled to have a hearing today, district spokesman Jane Bruss said.
