Man with screwdriver foiled in robbery try

10/6/2003

Two employees fought with a screwdriver-wielding robber late Saturday at a Clayton Street convenience store, but the robber left empty-handed.

Police said the incident happened about 10:20 p.m. Saturday when a man walked into Snappy Mart, 208 Clayton, and asked for credit for some items he wanted to buy.

When the employees turned him down, the man left but later returned with a screwdriver in hand, demanding money. A fight broke out with the man and two of the employees, police said.

The man lunged at the employees several times with the screwdriver, but neither was hurt seriously. The employees defended themselves by hitting the suspect with a large wooden stick before he ran off, police said.

The incident remained under investigation yesterday.
