Man waiting to be jailed flees, is arrested again

10/10/2003

A Northwood man waiting last night to be booked into the Lucas County Jail on an attempted robbery charge escaped only to be arrested again minutes later two blocks away from the lockup. He was returned to the jail, sheriff's deputies said.

Anthony Smith, 25, of 3520 Goodrich Ave., had been arraigned in Sylvania Municipal Court on the attempted robbery charge.

Mr. Smith was sitting without handcuffs on in the jail's booking area about 6:30 p.m. when he took off running out an open door, sheriff's deputies said.

Toledo police officers, who were in the booking area with another prisoner, pursued Mr. Smith on foot, finally catching him at Jackson and Erie streets. Mr. Smith is facing an additional charge of escape, deputies said.
