North Toledo resident suspected in burglaries

11/7/2003

A North Toledo man with prior burglary convictions was arraigned yesterday after city police arrested him and recovered a number of items they believed had been taken during burglaries in neighborhoods around the University of Toledo.

Rodney Baldwin, 43, of 3423 Buckeye St., was charged with burglary in a crime Sunday in the 2100 block of Evansdale Avenue. He also was charged with resisting arrest and obstructing official business, both misdemeanors, during his arrest Wednesday. He was being held in the Lucas County Jail in lieu of a $40,000 bond.

Police served two outstanding arrest warrants for aggravated burglary and burglary on Baldwin at the Buckeye residence about 7:20 p.m. Wednesday. They said they caught him when he opened the door for someone on the porch. During a search of the residence, detectives found the items, which included compact discs, videos, videocassette recorders, a power sweeper, and other equipment.

Because of the large number of stolen goods allegedly recovered, police suspect Baldwin in other burglaries, possibly from as far back as 2000. Detectives are reviewing dozens of reports, trying to match recovered items to property taken earlier.

Since 1981, Baldwin has been imprisoned three times, twice for burglary, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Web site.
