Woman reports $30,000 missing from residence

SANDUSKY - The Erie County sheriff's office is investigating a woman's claim that $30,000 is missing from her home and may have been buried in the county landfill.

Capt. Paul Sigsworth said the sheriff's department was contacted Monday by Kathy Roe of Oxford Township, who reported that six envelopes containing $5,000 each in $50 and $100 bills had disappeared. Mrs. Roe told investigators she and her husband kept the envelopes in a box and that when she went to retrieve some money to make her house payment March 26, the envelopes were gone.

Mrs. Roe later found a note in the box from a 15-year-old foster child who was living in her house. The note said the girl had seen the money several weeks earlier in the trash and that she believed it had been put out on the curb and picked up.

Captain Sigsworth said Mrs. Roe asked Sandusky County Children Services, which has custody of the girl, to place her in another home. The officer said managers at the Erie County Landfill in Milan Township told him it would be impossible to find the money if it had been buried four or more weeks ago. No charges have been filed.
