FOSTORIA - Vandals stole a backhoe, used it to dump rocks on a set of railroad tracks, unhooked a rail car, and littered an area of Independence Road early yesterday, Fostoria police said.

The rail car was unhooked and blocked a part of South Line Street, according to police. The vandals struck a parked car on Findlay Street and scattered trash and debris on Independence from a stolen truck.

Mayor John Davoli said the superintendent of water distribution told him vandals also drove over some trees planted near the water plant.

The initial reports to police came in at 3 a.m., followed by reports of disturbances at 5:30 and 5:40 a.m.
