An off-duty Toledo police officer who pleaded no contest last month after he was accused of being intoxicated while carrying a loaded gun into a Maumee club received probation and a suspended jail sentence yesterday in Maumee Municipal Court.

Richard Carl, 41, was sentenced to three years probation and a suspended 90-day sentence at Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio, Stryker, by visiting Judge Francis Frey. The judge ordered him to pay a $250 fine and court costs and to have no offenses for three years, no alcohol with random testing, and to attend three Alcoholics Anonymous meetings a week.

Officer Carl pleaded no contest March 19 to attempted possession of a weapon while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. The officer, who is temporarily assigned to the theft unit, was accused of having a loaded gun in the XO Club in December. He was said to be intoxicated and refused to leave. He was charged administratively with conduct unbecoming and suspended for 30 days without pay, with 10 of the days held in abeyance.
