Flory Gardens evacuated during smoky trash fire

7/10/2004

Toledo fire investigators were looking into the cause of a fi re

last night at the Flory Gardens apartments, 3425 Nebraska Ave.,

authorities said.

The fire was deliberately set in a pile of garbage in a vestibule

between exterior and interior doors of the one-story building,

Battalion Chief Brian Byrd said.

The structure is owned by the Lucas Metropolitan Housing

Authority.

The fire alarm went off about 6:30 p.m. The blaze caused

signifi cant smoke, so residents fl ed the structure. The fire was

extinguished a short time later, and residents eventually were

allowed to return.

There was no significant structural damage, but the ceiling above the fire sustained some smoke damage, the chief said.
