Sylvania Township police warn of mail thefts

7/29/2004

About 15 residents of Sylvania Township have had outgoing mail stolen from their home mailboxes in the last month, according to township police.

The department is urging residents to take their mail to a post office or secure mailbox, rather than leave it for pickup by their letter carrier.

Sgt. Frank Arvay said such complaints are usually rare, and the recent upsurge is unusual. He said a thief is often able to obtain personal information from outgoing mail which can make bank accounts and other assets vulnerable to theft.

Police asked residents to be alert for any unusual activity in their neighborhoods, particularly prior to residential mail delivery each day.
