S. Toledoan held in fatal shooting at Weiler Homes

Antonio I. Grier, 23, of 863 Prouty Ave., was arraigned in Toledo Municipal Court on one count of aggravated murder in the death of Elijah Johnson in the Weiler Homes.

Mr. Grier was taken into custody without incident about 1 a.m. yesterday at a house in the 3300 block of Buckeye Street in North Toledo. A relative contacted an off-duty Toledo police officer regarding his surrender. Mr. Grier declined an interview.

He is accused of arguing with Johnson, retrieving a small-caliber handgun, returning to the victim's location, 611 Easterly Ct., and shooting him Saturday, court records indicate.

Johnson, 30, of 761 Siegel Ct., was shot six times, according to autopsy results released by the Lucas County coroner's office. He was shot in the chest, back, abdomen, pelvis, and left leg.

His body was found between two cars outside the Easterly address in the Lucas Metropolitan Housing Authority complex. Investigators are not sure of the motive for the slaying.

"Elijah was just a young kid who opened a lot of wrong doors. He was basically a good kid. He just got caught up in the environment," said a woman who answered the door at the Siegel address but declined to identify herself.

Relatives of both men could not be reached for comment.

The two have had prior run-ins with the law, with each having misdemeanor convictions, according to court records. Johnson also served more than four months in a state prison from 2001 to 2002 on a drug trafficking conviction.
