Lake Township police add Tasers to armory

Lake Township have added Tasers to the list of weapons its police can use to help keep the peace, chief Mark Hummer told trustees last night.

Chief Hummer said four Taser model M26 units were donated to the township Friday by Toledo police, who recently bought 465 new X26 model Tasers that are more compact. The value of the four M26 units is about $4,000, he said.

In the next few weeks, about 12 of the township s 16 full-time officers will be trained to use the weapon, he said.

In other business, trustees asked for volunteers to lead a levy campaign to win support for the renewal of a levy for fire protection that will be on the November ballot.

The township is prohibited by law from spending public funds on the levy campaign for the proposed 1-mill, 5-year levy renewal.

It would generate $215,000 a year to operate township fire stations located in Walbridge and Millbury. The two stations have 67 volunteers.
