Boy in serious condition with gunshot wound

10/5/2004

A 10-year-old East Toledo boy was in serious condition yesterday, a day after he was accidentally shot in the abdomen by a friend who police said apparently got the gun from the victim's brother.

Detectives also are investigating how the victim's 16-year-old brother got the 38-caliber handgun.

Anthony Lewandowski of Elgin Avenue was being treated in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. His family declined an interview.

No charges have been filed, but they could be filed depending on the outcome of the investigation, Lt. Bill Moton said.

Police said the victim was visiting his grandparents when the shooting occurred. Lieutenant Moton said the victim, his brother, and 13-year-old friend were in the alley behind 244 White St. showing the gun to each other.

The victim's brother apparently left, and the friend was holding the gun when it went off and hit the victim, he said.

Detectives are investigating how long the victim's brother had the gun, which police recovered.
