Toledoan indicted for gun sale

An East Toledo man was indicted yesterday by a Lucas County grand jury for selling a gun to a 16-year-old boy, whose brother was shot in the abdomen with the weapon.

Jacob Bryant, 19, of 440 Greenwood Ave. was indicted on one count of improperly furnishing firearms to a minor. He is being held in the Lucas County jail.

Anthony Lewandowski, 10, of 118 Elgin Ave., was shot in the abdomen Oct. 3 in an alley near his grandparents' home, 244 White St. He was treated at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

Police said Anthony's elder brother, Michael, who lives at the White Street address, had the gun earlier in the day.

Later, a neighborhood friend, Terry Patrick, 13, of 1004 Front St., and Anthony were in the alley when Anthony was shot. Court records indicate that Mr. Bryant sold a 38-caliber revolver to the elder Lewandowski for $100.

During a hearing Monday in Lucas County Juvenile Court, the elder Lewandowski admitted to and was found guilty of delinquency in connection with tampering with evidence, a felony, said Melissa Wagner, a juvenile prosecutor. As part of his plea, a misdemeanor charge of delinquency in connection with carrying a concealed weapon was dismissed.

He is to be sentenced Oct. 28. That's also the day young Patrick, who is charged with delinquency in connection with felonious assault, is to appear again in juvenile court, Ms. Wagner said.

The brothers' mother, Julia Bryant, 34, of the Elgin address, was charged with felony child endangering after police said she knew about the gun, but failed to take it away from her eldest son.
