Swanton man faces 2nd rape indictment

BOWLING GREEN - A Swanton man charged with raping a woman in Perrysburg Township March 5 was indicted yesterday by a Wood County grand jury on five felony counts.

In an indictment filed in Wood County Common Pleas Court, Armin Lawrence Ryan, 37, was charged with aggravated burglary, robbery, kidnapping, rape, and corrupting another with drugs.

The kidnapping and rape charges include specifications that Ryan is a repeat violent offender and a sexually violent predator.

The kidnapping charge carries the specification that he committed the offense with sexual motivation.

Gary Bishop, an assistant county prosecutor, said Ryan allegedly broke into a mobile home at Friendly Village on Oregon Road, where he raped a woman in her 20s, forced her to ingest cocaine, and stole money from her purse.

Ryan was free on bond from Lucas County on an unrelated rape charge at the time of this incident. He had posted $15,000 bond and was scheduled for trial in Lucas County Common Pleas Court later this month for the charge, which stemmed from a Dec. 1 assault on a 35-year-old woman at her East Toledo home.

In the Wood County case, the victim told Perrysburg Township police she had met a man matching Ryan's description in a Waterville bar and agreed to go with him to a friend's house to play cards. She said he took her to a mobile home where he raped her and forced her to perform oral sex on him.

According to police reports, at one point he placed an object against her temple and threatened to shoot her if she did not do what he wanted. She told police she later convinced him to take her to buy cigarettes. At a convenience store in Waterville, she asked a clerk to call police, and the man fled.

Ryan, who turned himself in March 10 after Perrysburg Township police issued a warrant for his arrest, is being held in the Wood County jail on $500,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned March 28 before Wood County Common Pleas Judge Reeve Kelsey.
