Florida jail escapee arrested in West Toledo
3/26/2005A 22-year-old man who escaped from a Florida jail in February was arrested yesterday after leading law enforcement officers on a short foot pursuit in the 4100 block of Overland Parkway in West Toledo, authorities said.
Anthony Layne DeBoy, 22, of Naples, Fla., was being held last night in the Lucas County jail pending arraignment Monday in Toledo Municipal Court.
DeBoy, who had been in the Hardee County jail, Wauchula, Fla., on armed robbery charges, told Toledo police he was going to waive extradition, Toledo police Sgt. Tim Noble said.
DeBoy and another prisoner escaped Feb. 28 from the Hardee Country jail by climbing onto the roof of a storage shed and climbing over a wall around the jail's recreation area.
He has since made telephone calls threatening suicide by allowing himself to be shot by law enforcement agents, Sergeant Noble said.
Tipped by Arkansas authorities that DeBoy was heading to Toledo in a pickup truck he is accused of stealing there, area and federal agents yesterday were watching a business near Sylvania and Lewis avenues where a truck that matched the description of the stolen vehicle was parked. Police say he had contacts in Toledo.
About 4:45 p.m., police saw the man get into the truck. Authorities followed it for a short distance until the man jumped out of the moving truck and ran through backyards, only to be arrested after a short pursuit.
No weapon was found on DeBoy, Sergeant Noble said.
In Florida, DeBoy was serving time for parole violation and also was being held on charges of drug possession, forgery, grand theft, and burglary, authorities said.
