Police probe discovery of man's body

3/30/2005

Authorities are investigating the death of a Toledo man whose body was found yesterday in a wooded area near Cleveland and North Ontario streets in North Toledo.

The body of Mark Curtis, 40, whose last known address was in the 1500 block of Pool Street, was found about 4:30 p.m. by two fishermen. It was face-down in the bushes just north of Murphy's Pond. The man's pickup was found parked on Troy Street nearby, police Sgt. Greg Smith said.

Pete Adams, 34, of 621 Cincinnati St., said he was going fishing and was using a path to cut through the woods about 1:30 p.m. when he saw two men lying in the bushes and heard one of them snoring.

About three hours later, Mr. Adams said he was on his way back when he came upon the same spot, but saw only one man lying face down.

"I hollered at him, but there was no response, I felt for the pulse - there wasn't any," Mr. Adams said. "I was scared, started shaking, then I called police."

The cause of death was unclear, pending an autopsy and the results of toxicology tests, Sergeant Smith said.

The autopsy is scheduled for today, Dr. James Patrick, Lucas County coroner, said.
