Fire on 2nd locomotive delays 20-car train

4/30/2005

A locomotive fire brought a 20-car Norfolk Southern train bound for Harrisburg, Pa., to a temporary halt west of Garden Road and south of Shaffer Road in Monclova Township.

The train crew reported a fire in the second locomotive but had put most of it out with extinguishers when Monclova Township firefighters arrived about 2:45 p.m. The fire was completely out 25 minutes later.

Fire Chief Kevin Bernhard said the cause hasn't been determined, but he believes the exhaust stack overheated and ignited oil.

The disabled locomotive was dropped off at Norfolk Southern's Toledo yard and, within an hour, the train continued east, Norfolk Southern spokesman Susan Terpay said. The train loaded with trailers originated in St. Louis.
