Fire from heat lamp destroys barns, livestock

HELENA, Ohio A heat lamp is being blamed for a fire Sunday that destroyed two large wooden barns and killed hundreds of chickens in Sandusky County s Scott Township.

The blaze on County Road 26 was reported about 3:30 a.m., and firefighters who arrived a short time later found one of the barns engulfed in flames, Helena fire Chief Steve Shull said. The fire quickly spread to an adjacent barn.

Chief Shull said the blaze killed 17 hogs and about 300 chickens. No damage estimate was available yesterday.

Volunteer fire crews from Gibsonburg, Bradner, Kansas, and Risingsun helped extinguish the blaze.
