Parolee captured after jumping from vehicle during a traffic stop

6/19/2005

A man on parole after serving 7 months of a 12-month prison sentence for aggravated assault was arrested yesterday after he jumped from a car that police attempted to stop for a traffic violation and then led officers on a short foot chase in South Toledo, police said.

Ronniel Lewis, 28, of 5668 Glenridge Drive was charged with fleeing and eluding, drug abuse, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Lewis also was arrested on unrelated warrants for escape, robbery, obstruction of justice, and parole violation, Detective Sgt. Greg Smith said

Darlene Ladd, 35, of Petersburg, Mich., who also was in the vehicle, also was arrested and charged with fleeing and eluding.

Both were being held in the Lucas County jail pending arraignment in Toledo Municipal Court.

Officers tried to stop the car about 5:30 p.m. for a minor traffic violation at an unspecified South Toledo location, but the vehicle did not stop.

Officers pursued it for a short time on Foxchapel, Amsterdam, and Richards roads, Sergeant Smith said.

Lewis jumped from the moving car in the 4200 block of Foxchapel; Ms. Ladd continued driving until she lost control and crashed into a parked vehicle at Richards and Amsterdam, where officers arrested her, the sergeant said.

A few minutes later, officers captured Lewis at Hill Avenue and Torrington Drive, he said.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Web site lists Lewis as a parole violator.

He was paroled from the North Central Correctional Institution, Marion, Ohio, on Nov. 1, 2004.
