Grand jury indicts woman for altercation outside jail

A Toledo woman accused of using her car to assault a Lucas County sheriff's deputy in front of the county jail was indicted yesterday by a grand jury.

Jennifer Lynn Abdoney, 36, of 502 Sunset Blvd. was indicted on one count each of felonious assault and failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer.

She was being held last night in the county jail and will be arraigned in common pleas court.

Abdoney, who also uses the alias Coker, is accused of striking Deputy Jay Schmeltz on June 30 after he told her she was parked in a restricted area on Spielbusch Avenue.

Deputy Schmeltz, who was working outside security, tried to check Abodney's identification, but she allegedly tried to leave and ignored his order to get out of the car.

She allegedly put the car in drive, hit Deputy Schmeltz, and drove away. He fired at the car, striking the back window. He was treated at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

Jon Rogers, director of internal affairs for the sheriff's office, said Deputy Schmeltz recently returned to work. A hearing will be held next Friday before the Firearms Review Board to determine whether the deputy acted properly in firing his weapon.
