The city of Toledo has moved forward with legal steps to force its registered sex offenders to move away from local schools.
Requests for injunctions recently were filed in Lucas County Common Pleas Court against eight sex offenders whose registered addresses are within 1,000 feet of school property. Under a new Ohio statute, city law directors, county prosecutors, and others may ask a judge to enforce a rule that prohibits registered sex offenders from living so close to a school.
Many jurisdictions have not filed against sex offenders who violate the statute because its constitutionality is being challenged in U.S. District Court by the Cincinnati-based Prison Reform Advocacy Center and the American Civil Liberties Union.
Toledo attorneys filed the first request for injunctive relief against a sex offender July 14.
About 245 of Lucas County s more than 600 registered sex offenders live within 1,000 feet of a school in Toledo, John Madigan, the city s general counsel, has previously estimated.
