A Toledo man who stabbed his estranged wife's boyfriend several times in the chest and then tried to kill himself was booked yesterday into the Lucas County jail on an attempted murder charge, authorities said.

Eric Murray, 29, of 4315 North Haven Ave., is scheduled to be arraigned today in Toledo Municipal Court.

He is accused of stabbing Alan McCree, 37, of Newport Avenue, who police said was in critical condition at Toledo Hospital after the assault Sunday outside a Jackman Road residence. A hospital spokesman said yesterday that he had no information on a patient by his name.

Mr. Murray is accused of stabbing Mr. McCree outside 3721 Jackman, where the men were attending a party for Mr. Murray's son. Mr. Murray asked Mr. McCree if he loved his estranged wife. When Mr. McCree said he did, Mr. Murray pulled out a knife and stabbed him multiple times. Mr. McCree then drove himself to the hospital, police said.

Responding officers found Mr. Murray in the back yard with the knife in his hand, cutting himself. They ordered him to drop the knife, but he began to cut his throat. Police then subdued him with a Taser. He was treated at Toledo Hospital.

Before the attack on Mr. McCree, Mr. Murray was writing a suicide note, police said.
