A 45-year-old South Toledo man was shot fatally yesterday during an altercation at Michigan and Buffalo streets in the city's north end, police said.

Daniel Aguilar, whose address was listed in the 300 block of South Avenue, was pronounced dead at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

Dr. Cynthia Biesser, a Lucas County deputy coroner, said the cause of death was a gunshot wound in the chest.

Mr. Aguilar was involved in a dispute in the 1700 block of Michigan about 2:30 a.m. when another group confronted the group he was in, which resulted in gunfire, neighbors said yesterday afternoon.

Hussien Hassan argued with a person witnesses believed was Mr. Aguilar, according to Maha Hassan of 1714 Michigan, who is Mr. Hassan's sister.

She said someone broke a bottle in front of the residence where Mr. Hassan lives. He left the residence to check whether someone was trying to break into his car.

Ms. Hassan said Mr. Aguilar's group began to move away from the residence but he was confronted by a second group at Michigan and Buffalo and shots were fired.

Shirley Shields of 831 Buffalo said she heard the gunfire and saw what she believed were two groups of people firing shots into the air.

"I heard about six to eight shots," Ms. Shields said. "It was just crazy after that."

A person at Mr. Aguilar's residence yesterday said his wife declined comment.

Detective Denise Muszynski said police did not have a suspect as of yesterday afternoon.
