Toledo police are asking for information through the Crime Stopper program about the identity of the man who beat and robbed the owner of a Toledo cab company on his porch Aug. 5.

William Barnes, 64, owner of Eagle Cab, 3127 North Huron St., was sitting on his front porch, 708 Vinton St., shortly after 4:30 p.m. when he was attacked, police said.

Moments earlier, an employee drove up to be paid, and Mr. Barnes gave him $102 from a wad of cash. A man seated nearby got up and beat Mr. Barnes with a baseball bat, taking about $2,300, police said.

The assailant fled on foot after the employee refused to give him the keys to his taxi.

The assailant was described as black, in his late 30s, 5 feet, 2 inches tall, with a slender build. He had shoulder-length hair braided in back and facial hair. He was wearing a dark-colored shirt and blue or black nylon pants.

Anyone with information about the man is asked to call the Crime Stopper program. Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
